Therapeutic Behavioral Services (TBS) provides community-based,
one-on-one, short-term, support to young people who are at risk
of being moved into a higher, more restrictive placement
(hospital, residential facility) or need support transitioning to
a lower level placement (family home, foster home, group home).
TBS is an adjunct program, meaning youth must be enrolled in a
primary mental health service to be eligible. Our behavior
analysts target specific high-risk behaviors exhibited by the
young person. We partner with youth, their caregivers and other
natural support persons in their life to help facilitate lasting
behavior change.
Program Facts
Medi-Cal eligible children and youth ages 0 - 21 who are
at risk of escalating to a more restrictive level of care or are
transitioning to a lower level of care and are already enrolled
in a primary mental health program may receive TBS.
We partner with the primary mental health provider, whether
it is another organization, or Stanford Home practitioners to
help streamline services for the greatest, maximum impact.
TBS can be provided in the family home, in school and/or in
various other community settings.
Our behavior analysts are specially trained to help provide
individualized, flexible, short-term services to target
specific behaviors which put youth at risk. Together, we create
and implement a plan to minimize risky behaviors while increasing
coping skills and replacement behaviors.
Case Management Services
TBS operates within its scope of adding critical supports to help
youth stay in their current residences, in conjunction with the
primary mental health services. As such, case management services
can include:
Attendance and advocacy at Student Study Team
(SST) meetings, Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meetings
Attendance and advocacy at Team Decision Making (TDM)
meetings with Child Protective Services (CPS)
Attendance and at court dates with families
Assistance with arranging transportation for a variety of
needs, such as medical, psychiatric, education or employment
needs
Linking to community-based resources for food, clothing,
shelter
What Services Look Like
Our behavior analysts provide flexible, conveniently
scheduled home or community visits to meet with youth and
families to identify the specific behavior or behaviors that are
putting the young person at risk of losing their placement.
Behavior analysts provide one-to-one support to youth up to
24 hours 7 days a week.
Together, staff and families create and implement a
short-term plan, generally lasting 90 days, to help the young
person reduce risky behaviors while increasing coping skills and
replacement behaviors.
Behavior plans generally begin with our staff working
one-on-one with youth in their place of residence at
the times in which challenging behaviors occur.
We concurrently work with caregivers to help build their
parenting and coping skills to help support the young person.
Implementation of the behavior plan gradually transitions the
skills learned from staff to the youth and their caregivers to
allow for continued success.
